Lessons

Lessons with me are for people who love music and want to follow their own creative path.

I don’t subscribe to a system of levels or teach skills for skills sake. Instead, I tie assignments and projects back to your interests and approach practicing as a means to creative vision and expression. My goal is to give you the tools to become a self guided learner so that you can find joy every time you sit down to practice. This collaborative process opens the door to a project-based curriculum. People who work with me are doing things like:

  • Transcribing and emulating a Miles Davis solo

  • Learning a favorite Radiohead song

  • Analyzing the harmony of Tyler the Creator

  • Learning how to read and perform a Bach invention

How much do you expect me to practice?

Music can and should be a joyful craft. I will show you how to find joy within the craft by helping you develop a consistent, efficient and most importantly, fun practice routine. I care most about the routine and quality of practice. The quantity is up to you.

Will you teach me how to read music?

Yes, however I save reading until after you can play several songs by ear. I find that musicians who are comfortable playing by ear first have more confidence early on.

What ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels. The most common concerns I encounter in adults are: “it’s too late,” “I don’t learn fast enough,” “I don’t have enough time or energy,” “I’m not ready,” or “I’m not talented.” The truth is, it’s never too late to start or return to playing music. I’ve worked with adults with no prior experience who can now improvise over a blues. If you have fingers and a desire to make music then I’m here to help!

What is the youngest age that you teach?

I work with ages 6 and up. If your child shows musical inclinations, like singing around the house, or expresses interest in playing and listening to music, that’s a great sign. A good rule is, when a child knows her letters and numbers and is beginning to gain proficiency in reading, they are probably ready to try lessons.

Do you offer any performance opportunities?

Yes, I host an annual “piano party” in June. This is an opportunity for students to perform for their friends and family in a relaxed, supportive and non-competitive environment. Attendance is encouraged but not required. See below for my recent virtual piano party!

Do I need a piano or keyboard at home and if so, what kind?

Yes but you don’t need a piano! Keyboards have come a long way over the years and can be a great alternative.

I recommend any keyboard with the following features:

  • At least 61 keys

  • A “weighted action" or "touch-responsive" action (allows for loud/soft variations in sound as well as simulating the key-weight of an acoustic piano)

  • A bench, and a sustain pedal.

Take a look at this article for more info.

Should I also buy a keyboard from the ‘70s that I found on craigslist?

Of course you should.
